Which Standard Should You Use?
Gold Standard (85 grams) — Majority Position
The majority of contemporary scholars, including Mufti Taqi Usmani (Chairman, AAOIFI Shariah Board), AAOIFI, and the Fiqh Council of North America, recommend using the gold standard. Their reasoning: gold better preserves purchasing power over time, and the gold nisab more accurately reflects the level of wealth the Prophet ﷺ intended as the threshold for zakat obligation.
Silver Standard (595 grams) — Traditional Hanafi Position
The traditional Hanafi position, upheld by scholars at Darul Uloom Deoband and some within the European Council for Fatwa and Research (ECFR), prefers the silver standard. Their reasoning: a lower threshold means more Muslims fulfill their zakat obligation, which benefits the poor and needy. This is the more cautious and generous position.
Our note: If your wealth falls between the silver and gold thresholds, the more cautious path is to pay zakat. You are not obligated to by the gold standard, but choosing to give is always safer for your akhirah. As the scholars say: when in doubt, purify.
